Tales from the Hill: Spring 2025
25 March 2025
This January after many years of absence, we were delighted to welcome the return of a Highland pony to the estate. The pony, Gypsy, was brought in for a special purpose—deer extraction during the annual deer control period.
Gypsy was expertly handled by her breeder and trainer Alison, who brings years of experience in breeding and training these remarkable ponies. Alison’s dedication to the breed and her skill in preparing these animals for such vital work is truly impressive.
Through a collaborative effort, Gypsy was gradually introduced to the task, starting with deer skins and eventually working up to carrying an adult hind. It was a milestone moment when Gypsy successfully completed her first deer carry, showcasing both her strength and agility.
The Highland pony breed is particularly well-suited for this task, with their ability to navigate challenging terrain while carrying heavy loads. Gypsy, alongside Alison, proved to be a real star—wowing our guests with the incredible sight of a culled hind being transported to the larder, all without the need for mechanical vehicles.
We look forward to seeing Alison, Gypsy, and her fellow ponies return to the estate in the near future, helping to keep this traditional, natural method of deer extraction alive and thriving.
